Born In West Virginia, grew up in Texas.  Walter went on a plane ride that led him to serve for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, holding rank as a Major in the Instructor/Training division.

Beloved husband of Wilma Jane Smith (nee Price) & the late Clarice D. Smith (nee Douglas); loving father of Michael Andrew (Huison) Smith, Stephanie (John) Lynn Smith Nothum, and the late Susan Elizabeth Smith Olsen; dear stepfather of Karen Anne Price & Nancy Lynn (Marty) Beers; dear grandfather of Kimberly Sue (Jeffrey) Smith Masterang, Janet Lynn Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Beth Ann DeWalt, Ashley (Brad) Mosello, Paige (Lonnie) Fitzgerald, Brooke (Andrew)  Denny & Taylor James; dear great grandfather of Landon,  Jonah, Deus, Arkadind, Matthew, Riley, Landen, Luke, Brody, Noah, Jace & Scarlett.

Major Smith was a 30 year member of Community Covenant Church.

Services: Funeral from KUTIS AFFTON Chapel 10151 Gravois Monday January 9, 11:00 AM. Interment J.B. National Cemetery. Memorials to Community Covenant Church 777 West Adams, St., St. Louis, MO 63122 appreciated. Visitation Sunday 3-9 PM
