In Loving Memory

Hawkins, Doris (Dody)

(nee Anderson), a model of love and service to others, passed away on March 10, 2023. Born on December 1, 1926, she graduated in 1948 with a degree in Sociology, from Augustana College where she met the love of her life, Ted Hawkins. They married on June 12, 1948, and their beautiful 66 year marriage was filled with laughter, camping, world travel, and joy.

She was a loving mother and role model to David (Kathy), Crista (Jack) Taylor, Paul (Helen), and Laurie (Paul Wagner) Kingsley; grandma of 9, great-grandma of 20, all of whom she loved dearly.

Dody was a brilliant teacher and life-long learner who shared so many gifts and talents with all she met (teaching, writing, piano, singing, furniture refinishing, needlework, quilting, sewing, crafts, party planning, and her beautiful sense of humor).

She served on countless church and YMCA committees and was known as the talented “poster lady” at Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a gifted writer and wrote dozens of articles for her college newspaper, the monthly newsletter for the Illinois Lutheran Church Women, the Open Door, and oh so many humorous essays. One of her favorite quotes illustrates how she lived her life: “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show another human being, let me do it now and not defer it. For I shall not pass this way again.” She lived life to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it.

Services: A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 820 Lockett Rd., Kirkwood, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to YMCA of the Ozarks, 13528 State Hwy AA, Potosi, MO 63664, or Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center, P.O. Box 239, Oregon, IL 61061.
