In Loving Memory

Peters, Rachel

Rachel Peters went home to Jesus on June 30, 2021 at age 76.

Rachel was born to Lester and Malinda Hummel (Meeske) on June 15, 1945 on a farm outside of Daykin, Nebraska.  As a child, Rachel loved playing with her dogs and helping her mother around the house.  She attended a one-room school for her grade school years, and was a proud “Johnnie”, attending  St. John’s in Winfield, Kansas for high school and two years of college.  She completed her college degree in elementary education at Concordia Teacher’s College in Seward, Nebraska.  Rachel spent five years teaching at Lutheran schools in Austin, Minnesota and St. Louis, Missouri.  She also served the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod through jobs at Concordia Publishing House, the LCMS International Center, and her congregation, Timothy Lutheran Church, as a church secretary.

Rachel met her husband, Stanley Peters, in 1972 at dance lessons in University City, Missouri.  They married on October 29, 1977 and went on to have two children, Sarah Grillot (Peters) and Jenna Lutz (Peters).  The Lord blessed her with four grandchildren: Jack Grillot, Henry Grillot, Liam Lutz, and Haley Lutz.  Her grandkids were her pride and joy!

In addition to being a committed and loving wife and mother, Rachel loved playing the organ for many Lutheran churches in her lifetime and enjoyed singing in choirs.  Throughout her entire life, she had a steadfast faith in God, which she shared with those around her.

Rachel joins her father, mother, and sister, Rosalyn Nietfeld (Sam), in Heaven.  She is survived by her husband, two daughters, four grandchildren, and three siblings: Rev. Dr. Horace Hummel (Ruth), Shirley Shoenrock (Ted), and Kent Hummel (Joannie).

SERVICES: Visitation at Timothy Lutheran Church (6704 Fyler Ave. St. Louis, MO 63139) on Monday, July 5, 5-7 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 6, 10:00 a.m. until funeral service at 10:30 a.m.  Interment Resurrection Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers contributions to Timothy Lutheran Church (6704 Fyler Ave. St. Louis, MO 63139) or Papua New Guinea Mission Society (c/o Mary Anne Rall 6949 Pernod Ave. St. Louis, MO 63139) appreciated.

  5. My heart is full of sadness but also hope for the passing of Rachel. Such a giving, thoughtful person who loved her family and her Lord with an open and faithful attitude. Rachel was so kind and precious to our family and for her loving kindness and joy she gave to our son, Morgan, as well as treating him as her own. This is a rare gift of an open heart. I will miss her and cherish the memories of the time we spent enjoying each other’s company. I am praying continuously for God to hold up your family, as He always has.
