In Loving Memory

Hobbs, Kenneth B.

Kenny Hobbs was a man who prayed hard and loved hard and lived his faith every day in a way that made others have faith in faith. Surrounded by his family, Kenny was peacefully called home by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019. Married on Dec. 23, 1971, he was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart Diane (David) Hobbs for 48 years, she survives.   Kenny was born Mar. 20, 1950 in Hannibal, Missouri to the late Catherine and Joseph Hobbs.  He was a 1968 graduate of Hannibal High School and attended Hannibal-LaGrange College.

Kenny was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, and was often described as the “glue” that bound those relationships he held so dear. He cherished his daughter Kelly, she survives. He is survived by his three grandchildren, Claire, Cole, and Carson Dinwiddie and their father David Dinwiddie, all of Columbia, Missouri.  Kenny’s daughter and grandchildren were the lights and loves of his life.  He beamed with pride watching them grow and succeed in their endeavors, as he will undoubtedly continue to do each and every day from above. There is nothing he loved more than a rousing game of Monopoly with his grandsons. He is fondly remembered for his wit and wisdom, and more than occasional wisecracks, he shared with his family and friends.  He is also survived by his brothers, Michael Hobbs of Kansas and Donald Hobbs, of Mexico, Mo., and two nephews and one niece.

Kenny was a builder at heart, as evidenced not only in the pride and workmanship in the beautiful homes he built in Hannibal and Lake Ozark, Mo. from the time he established Hobbs Construction in 1978, but also in the lasting relationships he built and maintained. One such friendship that started at age 13 spanned a lifetime and built a family.  He was instrumental in introducing his friend, now the Hon. Charles E. “Sketch” Rendlen, III, to Diane’s sister Susan (David) Rendlen, now of St. Louis, they survive. Together Kenny and Diane helped lay the foundation for Sketch and Susie’s marriage and built a lasting friendship.  He is remembered as a fun-loving and caring uncle to Lindsey Rendlen Latzke, her husband Tom, and their daughters Vivienne and Elaina Latzke, all of St. Louis.

Kenny’s precision, eye for detail, and heart extended into all aspects of his life, from helping Kelly bake a heart-shaped cake for Girl Scouts projects to whipping up any kind of gravy, chili, or other delicacy. He nimbly applied his strong common sense to tackle any project that came his way.

Kenny retired in 2014 for health reasons, and he and Diane relocated to Sanibel Island, Fl., enjoying the beach together before returning to St. Louis, Mo. in 2018.

One could often find Kenny on a golf course, a game he loved more for the friendships he created than for the game itself. An avid St. Louis Cardinals fan regardless of the team’s standing, Kenny never missed a game, even if it meant watching on his phone screen while in Florida—where he was embedded in Red Sox and Twins territory. Throughout his life he enjoyed a friendly game of poker first with friends in high school and later with friends from church at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Kenny’s faith guided him throughout and he remained gracious and selfless in the face of health obstacles, choosing to focus on the needs of others and remaining hopeful that each coming day would be brighter. It is that faith that guided him peacefully into God’s eternal warmth, and for every “I love you” that is raised to Heaven for him, he is unquestionably responding, “Ditto.”

A Memorial Mass will be held at Annunciation Catholic Church, 12 West Glendale Road, Webster Groves, Mo., beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019.

Memorials may be made in Kenny’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or to Annunciation Catholic Church in Webster Groves, Mo.
