Lawrence-Grebel

In Loving Memory

Grebel, Lawrence Bovard

Lawrence Bovard Grebel passed away on February 2, 2023.

Larry was born on January 7, 1951 to Clement and Jean Grebel. After Larry graduated from St. Louis University High in 1969, he obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from St. Louis University.

Larry loved being a lawyer: trying cases, helping clients, and socializing with other lawyers.  He served in leadership positions in several legal organizations. He regularly wrote and gave presentations about trial tactics.  As a young lawyer, he famously served as lead trial counsel in the Kansas City Hyatt Regency skywalk collapse litigation.  That case set him on course for a highly successful career in which he tried hundreds of cases, argued numerous appeals, and obtained many precedential decisions.

In addition to fishing and golf, Larry enjoyed spending time with friends, especially his U High friends, and talking about his children and grandchildren.  He was spontaneous, impulsive, reckless, and fun.  He was an unstoppable force.  He will be missed.

Larry is survived by his sons, David, Mark (Tricia), and Benjamin (Jessica); grandchildren Dominic, Charles, Alice, Josephine, and Nathaniel; and siblings William, Deborah, Sally, and Thomas.  He was predeceased by his parents and brother Richard.

Visitation: Funeral from KUTIS AFFTON Chapel 10151 Gravois, Friday February 10, 11:00 AM. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Louis University High or the Alzheimer’s Association. Visitation Thursday 4:00-9:00 PM

  1. I was sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. I had a couple of cases with him in the 90’s. One was a bond claim on the St Louis County Justice Center Construction project. I think he represented K.C.I. He was a tough , old school , gentleman lawyer. No low blows. He won or lost on the high ground. My condolences. He was a fine lawyer. I enjoyed being his adversary.

  3. Larry was fearless. We played soccer together on a club team at SLU. I believe had been in a serious car accident and suffered a broken neck. On the field he refused to back down and would head balls up in the air. He was a fun and good guy and lived life the way he chose. He will be missed.

  5. Larry was one of the organizers of a great softball team in the mid-1970’s–“AFO”. We played our games at Blackburn Park in Webster Groves. I had the pleasure of playing with him and numerous others, including Dave Wright, Steve Harbo (sp?), Mike Doherty (sp?). RIP Larry.

  7. I know I wasn’t around St. Louis much over the last 50 years, but it feels like I lost a brother. I know you guys feel the same way. Larry was an all around good guy and he will be missed.
In high school, many a Saturday nights you could find Larry, Mike Doherty, and me at a dance or a party learning about friends, fun, and of course girls.
Take care, my brother. We will be along in due course.

  9. Larry was a wonderful person and always kind to me. I had a car situation once at like 2:00 am, and I called Larry and he came right away and picked me up and saw me home safely. If I called, he was always there. I will miss you Larry.

  11. Larry was like a big brother to me at SLUH, and we were in the same fraternity at SLU, along with his brother Rick. We would go wherever his sister Debbie was singing and playing guitar. We were real “groupies.” I’ve spent a lot of time with Larry and his sister Sally and some other friends from our high school class recently as we watched him lose his battle with Alzheimer’s. I will miss you so much, buddy!

  13. One of my most memorable friends at SLUH. Larry was always full of life. Always upbeat. In the years that passed, Larry was always the same stalwart and happy guy at our reunions and gatherings. His life has always filled mine with joy. Had great hopes of getting there today but the court stuff in our mutual profession and grandchildren, like Larry’s, have prevented me from getting to St Louis. His memory will always be with me.
