  1. Carl — all of us “stymies” will truly miss you. You will now be close to your best friend, Fitz. Say hello to him for us and keep him company until we all eventually join you. Wish you all the best in this new journey. I am proud to have called you my friend.

  7. So sad to hear of Carls passing. I grew up with Carl and the Downey family on ol ol Missy Ct. Also went to SLUH with Carl almost every day in his car pool, with him driving a classic Ford. Carl was brilliant and always kind to underclassmen like me. A great guy! And he liked to put the petal to the metal with that Big V8 dring to and from school!! He will be missed and my deepest condolences go out to the entire Downey family.

  11. Such a great tribute to Carl today. I remember the first time I heard Carl sing New York, New York. I don’t remember the event we were at but I do remember being surprised at how well he sang. I never knew Carl had such a good voice. I know I will always think of Carl when I hear that song.

Thoughts and prayers to all of you!

  13. Carl and I worked together in the car business for many years. He in sales and me in service. Whenever I had a service customer ready to buy or lease their next vehicle I always sent them to Carl knowing he would take good care of them. I reached out to him a handful of times over the last year, each time ending with “We need to get together sometime after all this Corona stuff passes.” I regret that never happened. I know Carl loved golf and he told me of his double eagle he had some years back. Now that’s something to brag about! We only got to play one time together and I remember it well. Carl was a purist…. no nudging the ball to improve his lie and no gimmies! Hearing of his passing has been weighing on me. I wish I had spoken to him more often. I never knew he was a great singer…. how cool. He is singing with the angels now! To all his family please accept my sympathy. You lost Carl and your Mom…. I can’t imagine your grief. May they enjoy everlasting life together in heaven. I pray you find peace in the days ahead.

  19. To the Downey Family:
Words can not express how I feel right now over the loss of both your mother and brother. I was so happy that both your mother and Carl kept in touch even after we moved away from Missy Ct. Your mother with her birthday a day apart from mine (always forgot if hers came before or after mine) and with Carl over at Plaza Motors (by the way he was the most honest and knowledgeable car salesman I have ever known).
As difficult of a time as this must be for you, please remember that your mother and Carl are now in heaven with your dad.
    All our love,
    Sabrina, Jen and Steven Straub

  21. So sorry and shocked to hear of Carl’s passing. I spent many a golf trip, both with the FQ group and the car guys group to which Carl introduced me. Carl was kind enough to help me during a tough time and allow me to rent a room in his condo for a couple years some time back. He was a good and compassionate man and I will miss him and always remember his calm demeanor and good will towards all people. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Downey family during this trying time.
