In Loving Memory

Dorsey, Constance Adelaide Murray

Died peacefully on October 30, two months shy of 103, in the home she had loved for over 66 years.  She was the mother of Constance Adelaide “Addie” Dorsey Tomber, mother-in-law to Phillip Tomber and proud Mama of William Stuart “Billy”  Tomber; Constance Adelaide “Connie”, Brian, Patrick Murray, and  Conner Kelly Lang;  Katherine Patricia “Sweetie”, Andy,  William Francis, Paul Conner and Mary Constance Siorek; Elizabeth Egan “Lizzy”, Josh and David Tomber-Young.

Connie was the daughter of Adelaide and Richard Murray, the big sister of beloved Richard Conner and Katherine Patricia Murray Pasquesi.  She grew up surrounded by beloved cousins in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois.  She attended Villa Duchesne and then Maryville, in St Louis. She returned home and worked at the bank for a short time but served as a bank director there for many years.  But, Connie always wanted to teach.  When they opened a one room country school, outside of town, they asked 18 year old Connie to be the teacher.  She was one happy lady.  She remained devoted to education for the rest of her life.  Connie taught at Mary Queen of Peace and then moved to St Elizabeth when the new parish was established in Crestwood. She remained there for 27 glorious years, loving every minute, surrounded by her angels. She remembered and adored every wonderful child who sat in her class.

She was awarded with the first Philippine Duchesne Award, presented to an outstanding lay teacher in a Catholic school and was named a Hidden Heroine by the Girl Scouts. She earned a Tres Bien award for an outstanding alum at Villa.  She was also thrilled to receive the Centennial Award for outstanding Alum at Maryville and very proud of a scholarship established in her name at the university, given each year to a student in the School of Education, so that a young scholar can follow in her footsteps.

Connie loved to travel. She wanted to see the entire world and meet people from every culture.  She rode a camel in Egypt, sold mint in a market in Morocco, and visited schools in China, and threw out the first pitch of the Cardinals season at the age of 99. One of her favorite adventures was a trip down the  MURRAY River near ADELAIDE, Australia.

Connie often commented that she received bountiful flowers while she was alive, so please no more.  She would love for you to repeat one of many acts of kindness you have shown her over the years.  Please write to your old teacher, stop by and visit an elderly friend, or send some soup to an appreciative neighbor.  Please do this in memory of Connie.

Services: A visitation will be held at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church on Friday, 3-8 pm and a Funeral mass will be held on Saturday at 11 am.
