Dale Wayne Smith, native of St. Louis, MO, passed into Heaven on July 12, 2019, at the age of 70.  Born in Oklahoma City, Dale was the first of five children of Col. Howard H. Smith and Letty Smith.  As the son of an Air Force navigator, Dale moved to many different bases, graduating high school from Plattsburg, NY.  He moved back to Oklahoma to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he met and married his wife of 42 years, Vicki.  He was proud to be a Sooner and graduated from OU with a BBA concentrating in Finance in 1972.  After graduating, Dale enjoyed a long career with Southwestern Bell in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and St. Louis, MO.  After leaving SWBT, he worked as a real estate appraiser and ultimately retired from the St. Louis County Assessor’s office in 2014.  Dale was also a member of the board of directors of Gateway Metro Federal Credit Union in St. Louis for many years.

Dale experienced the boating and camping life as a child with his parents and siblings and carried that love for the rest of his life, mostly at Grand Lake in Grove, OK.   Another life-long pleasure was traveling across the country on family vacations.  He also looked forward to the annual get-togethers to attend OU football games with family and friends.  Later, Dale was passionate about riding his Harley with the Crossings Riders from his St. Louis church—The Crossing.  He was deeply touched when the Riders created and wore patches of his father’s service picture on their leather vests and rode together in the Run for the Wall from St. Louis to Washington DC.   Special thanks to Mr. Bill Casey for being a true friend, among many others Dale always remembered.  After Parkinson’s Disease found Dale, he always told others, “I may have Parkinson’s, but Parkinson’s does not have me.”  He stayed active with weekly golf outings with his buddies and helped with meetings and events sponsored by the Oklahoma Parkinson’s Foundation.

Dale is survived by wife, Debi Mustain Smith of Edmond, OK, where the couple resided after their marriage in 2014.  He also leaves two sons and one daughter from his first wife, Vicki Smith:  Carey and wife Elena of Switzerland; Stephen and wife Lauren of St. Louis,MO, with grandsons Brennan and Tristan; and daughter Kelly Smith Slawson of St. Louis, MO.  Dale is also survived by three sisters and a brother:  Brenda Stremble of Oklahoma City, OK; Kim Burns  (Hershall) of Oklahoma City, Cheryl Smith-Johnson (Ralph) of Dallas, TX, and Kevin Smith of Houston, TX; his very special Aunt Betty and many close cousins, nephews, and nieces.  He will also be greatly missed by his extended family: Dusty Mustain and wife Dawn, daughter Elaine of Oklahoma City; Ryan Mustain with Kristen Abrams of Saratoga Springs, NY; Melissa (Mustain) Wright and husband Robby, children Isaac and Olivia, who called Dale their “GrandDale”. He is preceded in death by his father, Col. Howard H. Smith, USAF who was KIA in the Vietnam conflict, and beloved mother, Letty Smith.  Dale sadly lost his wife, Vicki, in 2012.

Dale had a love for music and an excellent singing voice.  He often sang songs of the 60’s, contemporary Christian tunes and traditional hymns.  Above all, Dale will be remembered for his kindness and caring for family and friends.  He had an ability to establish a connection with anyone he happened to meet, whether it was his work colleagues, his children’s life-long friends, favorite waiter at Chili’s, Braum’s employees, or the nurses who cared for him at both the Oklahoma Heart Hospital and OU Medical Center.   Well done, Dale.  We know you are rejoicing in Heaven with Christ our Lord and all your departed loved ones.  With our hope In Christ alone, we look forward to seeing your sweet smile again.
