Florence Lillian Flachsbart, our beloved mother, sister, and relative, died on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Laclede Groves Convalescent Care Center in Webster Groves at the age of 95.  She was born May 17, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, the eldest of three children born to George and Ruth (Telle) Trapp.  She attended Holy Cross Lutheran Elementary School, Roosevelt High School, and St. Louis Business College.

Florence married Bernard Flachsbart on February 28, 1943.  They spent 61 happy years together and raised three boys: Peter, John, and James.  Florence and Bernie were lifelong members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church where they were involved in a wide variety of groups and service activities over the years.  They both modeled a love for the Lord and for His church and mission. Florence’s work career included serving as secretary to the treasurer of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (1959-1965) and as Executive Secretary to the President of Concordia Publishing House (1965–1984), where she also served as secretary to the Commission on Church Literature.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother Gilbert, who died in 1932 at the age of 4.  Since Florence’s mother Ruth came from a family of 11, her father George came from a family of 12, and husband Bernard came from a family of 7, Florence was blessed with many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones. Survivors include her brother Leland (and Barbara) Trapp from St. Charles, Missouri; three sons and their families: Peter (and Jan) Flachsbart of Kaneohe, Hawaii; Jack (and Joy) Flachsbart of Yakima, Washington; and James (and Cathy) Flachsbart of Oregon City, Oregon; five grandchildren, and nine greatgrandchildren.

Florence and Bernard modeled solid family values and provided a loving Christian home.  Florence was gentle, cheerful, optimistic, and always had a word of encouragement.  Her sons and their families are deeply grateful for the many happy memories, love, and laughter that she and Dad shared with all of us over the years.

A memorial service will be held at Laclede Groves Chapel on Friday, July 21, at 10:00 AM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2650 Miami, St. Louis, Missouri 63118.
